Three Games I’d Like To See Become Movies

Silent Hill MovieA comment got me thinking about the possibility of more games crossing over into the movie realm, to help counter game critic’s arguments against the value of today’s favorite past time. It’s sometimes common for a movie to launch a game after its success in theaters, but the reverse hasn’t happened as often as I’d like.

Can you think of a game you’d like to see turned into a Hollywood blockbuster?

It’s true that game makers often borrow material from movies for their games. But in most cases it’s so loosely done that I wouldn’t consider, in those situations, that the movie spawned the game necessarily in that order.

So in the tradition of games-turned-films like Silent Hill, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil, I’ll name three titles I think would make pretty cool movies as well.

World of WarcraftWorld of Warcraft. With the genre success of a trilogy like Lord of the Rings, I could see Warcraft making a hit in film. The special effects alone would probably be amazing, if not overdone too much. With all the lore and character development in the Warcraft history, there would be enough material to keep our suspension of disbelief occupied for at least a few hours.

Monkey Island - LucasArtsMonkey Island. This is the comedy wild card nomination. What could be more fun than spending an hour and a half with characters like Guybrush Threepwood and LeChuck on the big screen? I’ll tell you what: casting the actor to play Guybrush, for one. Now that’s an audition reel I’d love to posses after production for some laughs.

Diablo - BlizzardDiablo. Another title from Blizzard, the makers of World of Warcraft. Chalk it up to some really creative game designers; they get two nods in this nomination of mine. I spent a lot of time in both Diablo titles, and I enjoyed the story a lot. I would probably say this is my first choice, out of these three, as most wanted game to movie cross over.

While researching on IMDB for this article, I came across a few future game-to-movie productions you may find interesting. At least I did. I hadn’t heard anything about them!

Metal Gear Solid (2009), Castlevania (2009), Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2009)

Also, this may be of interest to you if you think Diablo would make a great movie.
