LucasArts Let Downs

Gladius - Xbox - LucasArtsIt’s a shame that a company I can say has produced some of my favorite game titles of all time has also been a major source of let downs for me now and again.

I wrote about wanting to see a new Monkey Island previously. It’s been forever since LucasArts said another sequel would follow, and it just doesn’t look like it’ll ever happen. This isn’t the only time they’ve hinted sequel and not followed through, however.

Earlier today I remembered a game from a few years back that I really enjoyed playing. It was Gladius, from LucasArts. Probably one of their most underrated games. It was awesome; and I played it start to finish eagerly. If you haven’t heard of it before I highly recommend you read the following wiki link and go buy or rent this game sometime if it’s your type of thing.

From the Wiki on Gladius (excerpt at very bottom):

LucasArts left the door open for a sequel to the game (and hinted at one in the ending), but has not followed up on these plans due to lack of commercial success.

Meh. Always about the bucks. And that’s fine, but don’t dangle it in front of my face then pull it away! That’s what annoys me the most. If you don’t expect to run another title for financial reasons, that’s one thing. But don’t pump fake hype and hope into a loyal LucasArts gamer’s head then tell ‘em much later on that it’s just not profitable and won’t happen.

It’s sad, because titles like Monkey Island and Gladius were amazing in my eyes. I’ve never experienced stories in games that were as enjoyable as many of the titles that once came from LucasArts. They have a gift for it, and I wish they’d use it more.

In closing… I love the original Star Wars movie trilogy like most people, but I am tired of watching LucasArts milk that series to death in all their games, lol. I guess it pays the bills, and they’re in this for a profit like any other company. But damn!

I still think of LucasArts as a really creative and excellent game making company; but I guess I’m just a bit let down at times when it comes to some of their follow through on the non cash cow titles.
